Clark has observed and attended to African American music and dance from The days of the Charleston to break dancing -- the overlapping, evolution and variation. To the bottom

Styles of music such as ragtime, jazz and rock are inspirations for the dancers from the cakewalk to the break. between the two world wars - jitterbugging was the core of popular dancing, and for the past three decades rock and roll has flavored the scene.

You remember some of the dances - eagle rock, ballin' the jack, snake hips, fishtail, shimmy, black bottom, lindy hop, suzy q. shorty george, the mooch, boogie, peckin, truckin; etc. today they are too numerous to try to name, but the "music go round and round and it comes out here."

Clark says: "In The Groove was inspired by my younger brother Isaiah, one of the coolest and baddest jitterbugs of the 1930's. He could also play many musical instruments." The couple dancing are grooving - completely zonked on the music. Clark explained: "at such a high moment the body and the music speak the same language."

The original lithograph was drawn in reverse on limestone from which it was printed in 1939.
