PENDLE HILL (1947)
In the summer of 1947 Clark spent several months in a Quaker community and Quaker school of Pendle Hill painting the surroundings. "The Barn", a 16 x 20 oil on canvas and Post Office a 12 x 16 oil painting on board are two such examples. He took his two year old son with him on many of these excursions which lasted about three and a half hours. The younger Clark played close by, occasionally coming over to observe the magic his father performed with a small knife and color on canvas. It didn't take his father long to resolve each painting.
There are two paintings of "Post Office". The second Painting is much larger.

SUMMER IN PENDLE HILL (1947)
If you look very close at the photograph of Clark painting on location, on the right, you will see New House [rear entrance] in progress. You may also notice the ragged edges of a stretched support material. This photograph is one of the few records known where we can see Clark at work and at the same time identify the subject he is painting.
