SCULPTOR, TOOL MAKER, TECHNICIAN, PRINTMAKER, PAINTER, ILLUSTRATOR, INSTRUCTOR, AND AN ARTIST'S ARTIST
SCULPTOR: Barrington has carved in wood and stone, and has done ceramic, stone and metal casting.
ECHO consultant concerning computer laser sculpture at Pacific Grove, Califronia 1984 to 1985.
In 1975-1976 McLean took a one-year sabbatical leave from Cabrillo College, in Aptos, California, to work and study in Ghana. He set up a studio in South Legon Ghana. Carved linguist staff figures for Chiefs Nii Otto Kwame and Nii Djan. At the University of Legon, became a research fellow with the Cultural Studies Department under Professor Nketia.
TOOL MAKER: Built woodcarving duplicator, and produces tools in metal.
MASTER TECHNICIAN: Barrington has built burn-out kills and furnaces and is a master mold maker. At the Artworks Foundry in Berkeley CA, he worked as an independent contractor-moldmaker.
PRINTMAKER: Does woodcuts. Began working in stone and metal plate lithography in 1980.
PAINTER: Barry is a colorist; paints abstract forms on sculptured canvases. He uses oils and acrylics and works easily well in transparent water colors and gauche. His subjects in gauche and transparent water color are figures, landscapes and still-lifes.
ILLUSTRATOR: Commissioned to do CD-Rom album cover (MCARecords) titled "ON THE ROAD WITH B.B. KING" in 1995. Illustrator for the Inter-American Police Academy in Panama Canal Zone between 1963 and 1964.
INSTRUCTOR:
Born Barington Cornelius McLean in Colon, Panama of African Jamaican parentage. He grew up bilingual in Spanish and English.
